NASSAU, BAHAMAS – In 1959 – the far side of the moon was photographed for the first time by the Soviet Union’s Luna 3 spacecraft.

The far side of the moon is shown in this image from the lunar reconnaissance orbiter from March 2010. The image shows the moon’s topography from lro’s lola instruments with the highest elevations up above 20,000 feet in red.
