NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 47-year-old man convicted of attacking and raping a woman as she left a bar has been jailed for 12 years.

Romeo Major was unanimously convicted of rape and causing grievous harm following a trial before Justice Andrew Forbes.

The woman met Major inside a bar in Freeport. As she was leaving, Major offered to walk her to the bus stop.

However, once outside Major struck the woman in the face with a partially-filled gin bottle, breaking her jaw and injuring her left eye.

He then dragged her behind the building and raped her.

The victim eventually escaped and was taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

DNA evidence linked Major to the crime.

Since committing the crime in 2016, Major changed his life and has become a Christian.

Justice Forbes said he hoped the convict would continue “to evolve and become a better person.”

He was sentenced to 12 years for rape and eight years for causing grievous harm. The sentences will be served at the same time.
