NASSAU, BAHAMAS – There were 22 murders in the month of March, marking one of the most deadly months in Bahamian history.

Jared Higgs tells us more.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander made the revelation while he appeared at this week’s press briefing.

The murder count hit 43 when a man was shot and killed in Hollywood Subdivision off Cowpen Road on Wednesday night. Murders 41 and 42 occurred on Mother Pratt Park and Sutton Street, off Kemp Road, respectively.

Fernander says many of the murders are connected. The victim on Cynthia ‘Mother Pratt’ Park was an associate of victims of a murder that occurred a couple weeks ago.

The victim in Hollywood Subdivision was also an affiliate of a man who was murdered recently. But police aren’t sure whether he was the intended target, since he was driving a vehicle that belonged to somebody else.

Commissioner Paul Rolle says police also believe that the Sutton Street victim on Tuesday night was not the intended target of the killing.

Police say they try to intervene in disputes, but it is challenging.

Fernander told the story of recent murder victim, who police brought in for questioning shortly after a previous attempt was made on his life. The man wouldn’t talk to police, and was killed days after he was released.
