NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Davis administration finalizing the purchase of Doctor’s Hospital’s Harbourside for $29M – located on East Bay Street.

It’s a move officials say will allow for long-planned renovations at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) to finally move forward.

Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville says the facility will now operate as part of PMH supporting services while critical structural work gets underway.

“ It’s a new facility that is right off of East Bay Street. We have finalized that agreement now, and for about a year we have been planning to move because we need to renovate the kitchen at the Princess Margaret Hospital…”

Darville says the kitchen renovation is far more complex than many people realize, involving demolition and major structural repairs at the aging hospital, which was built back in 1956.

Dr. Michael Darville – Minister, Health and Wellness

“  The worst thing you could have is three and four different renovations going on in the hospital simultaneously. The accident emergency renovation is completed, now we’re gonna go into the kitchen where we’re gonna do the demolition and the structural repairs. And then from there we’ll go into the Legacy Ward where we can bring these other aspects of the hospital on stream.”

“We took a lot of pressure as a result of it because a lot of people don’t understand the complexities of these renovations. It’s not just going in there and painting. These are structural things to fix…”

The Legacy Ward is also set for major upgrades, including a new dialysis unit, expected to be ready by April.

However, how much will this cost tax payers?

Kitchen renovation alone is expected to reach $7M , with similar costs anticipated for Legacy Ward upgrades.

Dr. Michael Darville – Minister, Health and Wellness

“ The lower portion of the Legacy Ward will be the new dialysis unit, and all of the equipment for the new dialysis unit has already been purchased and should be in the country probably before the end of April.”

“So you’ll see where we go ahead – an award contract for the renovation of the dialysis unit and by extensions, the Eye Ward, and then of course, the Adolescent Unit.”

As for a timeline, the health minister says an announcement will be made in two weeks.
