MEXICO – A strong earthquake rocked Southern Mexico today, sending shockwaves through the capital and briefly halting the president’s morning briefing.

The 6.5 magnitude quake, centered in Guerrero state, struck as President Claudia Sheinbaum was speaking to reporters, forcing an immediate evacuation when seismic alarms sounded.

Buildings swayed across Mexico City, lamps and blinds shook and hospitals moved patients outside as a precaution.

The U.S. geological survey says the quake was shallow and felt across neighbouring states.

Officials report no serious damage or injuries but the tremor reignited fear in a country all too familiar with devastating earthquakes and the memories they leave behind.
