NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Emotions ran high at The Bahamas Department of Corrections (BDOCS) Wednesday morning as officers gathered for grief counseling sessions following the tragic death of their colleague, Ashantio Johnson, who was killed outside a restaurant and bar last week.

Johnson, a prison officer and member of the 2024 entry squad, was stabbed to death on Baillou Hill Road. His death sent shockwaves throughout the department, prompting Commissioner Doan Cleare to arrange professional counseling for the entire squad.

Cleare described Johnson’s team as “a very close unit,” saying the department has been working tirelessly to support them through the tragedy. He also confirmed that the accused, once remanded, will be treated fairly, despite the emotional toll on officers.

Assistant Chaplain Angelo Rolle reflected on the last time he saw Johnson, praising his dedication and pride in service. Assistant Commissioner Rolean Forbes added that even in grief, the department remains inspired by Johnson’s example and lasting impact.

BDOCS officials say counseling and emotional support will continue for all staff affected by the loss.
