ANTIGUA & BARBUDA – Delegates from across the world filled the Antigua and Barbuda National Performing Arts Centre Tuesday morning for the official opening of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Presidents, prime ministers and global delegates heard about the challenges and opportunities facing the 56-member organization.

In addressing the Commonwealth family, King Charles III reflected on his long association with the organization, calling it an important part of his life.

However, one of the most significant and anticipated moments came as he turned to the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade amidst the controversy over calls for reparations and a formal apology.

The King acknowledges both the achievements and wrongs of previous generations, and that history cannot be changed.

He also says there are lessons to be learned from it.

From there, it was his pledge to find ways for Commonwealth countries to work together in modern partnership.

Host Prime Minister Gaston Browne welcomed Commonwealth delegates, emphasizing the importance of the gathering and the opportunity it presents.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey also addressed the group.
