The Cancer Society of the Bahamas is Here to Help

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Cancer Society of The Bahamas focuses on cancer patient care and health awareness year-round. Our Marlena Leonard has the latest on the organization and why more Bahamians are seeking financial support for cancer treatment.

“We have seen an increase in the number of persons requesting financial assistance, whether to pay outstanding bills or just to get started with their treatment routines. Sometimes, they need to place a minimum deposit just to begin chemotherapy or radiation treatment, so our financial assistance program helps them do that. It is a one-time amount of $1,500, and once they pay that, they can get started with their treatment.”

The Cancer Society is also working on expanding its Cancer Caring Center, which reached capacity during the pandemic.

“That project will not only see the addition of more rooms but, in our long-term strategy, we hope to someday offer hospice care. We also want to assist people living in Nassau who may need a place to rest, recover, and recuperate after treatment until their family members can take them home.”

Wilkinson noted that financial donations are essential but emphasized that other forms of support are equally valuable.

“Outside of financial support, people can donate their time by assisting at fundraising events or visiting patients in our caring center. Donating food items or volunteering time are other ways to help, and we don’t turn any assistance away.”
