GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Dilapidated buildings have become a significant concern for residents of Freeport.

It’s an issue that falls under the purview of the Building and Development Department at the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

Vice President Nakira Wilchcombe acknowledges this has been a sore spot for the department.

She also revealed proposed legislation is in the works to enhance environmental management efforts.

Recently, the department undertook a substantial project in the international bazaar to address these concerns.

“To remove most of the buildings and I think we are about, I’d say, about 60-70% through with some of the buildings, structures that have been in the International Bazaar for years in a dilapidated manner, and we know that we have to do away with old to make room for new,” she said.

“And so right now, even though the state may not be as pleasant, but it is going to make new room for the new buildings and new structures to come.’

However, she’s calling on owners of these structures to do their part.

“If they’re not doing anything with their buildings, rather than then see these buildings just continue to deteriorate, contact us,” Ms. Wilchcombe said.

“You know, give us a call and we can see what can be done. We all always encourage persons before we take the avenue of demolishing a building. We encourage persons to come, you know, fix the buildings on the outside, in particular if, even if you can’t get to the inner core of the building, do what is best or possible on the exterior”

The vice president admits they do hear the concerns of residents.
