NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Scientific Support Services Unit is housed at the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s East Street Headquarters in New Providence.

And as I found out when I recently toured the facility, it’s not only where all evidence in local crimes is processed. They also do limited testing for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

These officers traveled from Exuma to bring evidence on a case they were investigating.

On this day, Inspector Nakita Taylor was tasked with processing the evidence.

So who else works in the unit?

The nearly 30-person lab is made up of ballistics experts, controlled substance analysts, biologists and technicians and they’re not all police officers, some are civilians.

And they’re led by Scientific Support Services Director, Chief Superintendent Rochelle Deleveaux.

She says given how many areas of forensics they cover, there is never a day they’re not busy.

And with less than 30 people in the unit, they’re also hiring.

If you’re looking at a career in the unit here’s what you need: a Bachelor’s Degree in biology or chemistry and of course, you can’t be afraid of hard work.
