NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 65-year-old deacon has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted incest.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 65-year-old deacon has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempted incest.
The convict’s name has been withheld to protect the identity of his now 17-year-old victim.
The Court heard that the victim’s mother fell on hard times in 2019 and moved back home with her then-11-year-old daughter.
On two occasions in September 2019, the girl’s grandfather, then 58, attempted to have sex with her.
In passing sentence, Justice Renae McKay said that the penalty was intended to act as a deterrent given the prevalence of sexual crimes against children.
