NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Making food security our priority! The much-anticipated Agri-Business Expo 2025 officially opened today on Gladstone Road.

It’s expected that dozens of local farmers and businesses will showcase their homegrown goods, spreading awareness and making an extra dollar or two.

Over 20 Bahamian vendors are producing and selling locally grown foods and beverages.

The Agri-Business Expo 2025 officially opened on April 4th, 2025, at the Gladstone Road Farmer’s Market site.

The yearly event has become a staple for backyard farming enthusiasts and those looking to support local farmers.

Agriculture and Marine Resources Minister, Jomo Campbell, says it’s just the latest step in improving food sustainability.

“We definitely want to increase awareness and education and just open the minds of our local population, helping them understand that we can truly feed ourselves. We should simply seek to prefer what we grow here locally at home over imports. We talk from time to time about reducing our billion-dollar food import bill, but the government can’t do it alone. It’s up to the consumers who go into the shops and make the choices as to what they eat, to actually believe that in buying Bahamian, they’re not getting second-class or second-rate produce. And as you can taste and tell from everything being sold out here today, everything is truly first-class.”

The government is also sponsoring 30 schools throughout the country with a $2,500 agricultural grant.

Acting Prime Minister, Chester Cooper, says the annual event is further evidence that local interest in agriculture is growing among residents.

“When we consider the tomatoes in our salad, the grouper on our plates, the cassava in our stew, we are reminded not only of our rich culinary culture but of The Bahamas’ tremendous potential for self-sufficiency.”

Zhang Hongliang – Chargé d’Affaires, Chinese Embassy

“We will partner with BAIC to donate farming tools to local farmers. Second, from June 18 to July 1, we will sponsor 15 Bahamian experts for two weeks of agricultural training in China, with all costs fully covered by the Chinese government.”
