NASSAU, BAHAMAS – She’s the first Bahamian appointed to serve in Jamaica and Alveta Knight knows the weight of her role.

And Knight takes her job seriously. In fact, I saw that commitment firsthand two years ago during the Goodwill Games in Jamaica.

Knight was a consummate professional, a diplomat through and through – even taking the time to show my cameraman and me around in our downtime.

You see for her, it’s more than a job, it’s a responsibility.

As a woman, she takes pride in her role and even greater pride in the country’s diplomatic footprint on the world stage.

But what’s next? And just how does she plan to help more women break into diplomacy?

Here’s her message to young aspiring diplomats:

“Take a leap of faith and if you feel this is something you want to do, like any profession, go forth and try to achieve it but practically try to get yourself immersed in a language, try to immerse yourself in studies that foster you going into the diplomatic arena for example international relations, international affairs, law anything of that nature but if you feel this is your drive and your passion, aim for it.” she said.
