NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas Alzheimer’s Association is raising awareness and calling for a national dementia plan.

Currently The Bahamas has approximately two thousand people living with dementia. That number is expected to triple by 2030.

The association president says without proper data collection on dementia, they often have to resort to estimates based on drugs given out on the National Health Insurance plan.

Poitier warns that this, along with the fact that dementia screenings aren’t widespread in The Bahamas, could lead to people missing the chance to have early detection, and have a harder time managing their condition.
