UNITED STATES – Apple users can now digitize their U.S. passport, thanks to a new “digital ID” feature launched Wednesday.

The digital ID which does not replace a physical passport, lets people store and present their ID in Apple Wallet.

Setup requires scanning the passport photo page, reading the embedded chip with an iPhone, and completing facial verification steps before the ID is added to wallet.

To use it, holders simply double-click into Apple Wallet, select digital ID, and tap their device near an identity reader.

Apple says the feature will soon work with more businesses for identity and age verification in person, in apps, and online.
