NIGERIA – Armed bandits have killed at least 25 people in a village in northern Nigeria, despite a local peace deal meant to protect the community.

Residents and police say gunmen stormed Doma village in Katsina state late Tuesday night, moving house to house and into farmland, tying up victims before shooting them.

Witnesses described scenes of freshly dug graves on Wednesday as families buried their dead.

The attack comes five months after villagers reached an informal agreement with the bandits, offering cash or food in exchange for safety, a practice that has become common across northwest Nigeria.

Officials warn such deals often collapse, leaving communities vulnerable to deadly reprisals.
