NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Progressive Liberal Party supporter D’Asante Small is making her political ambitions known, announcing she’s eyeing the Golden Isles seat following the sudden passing of Environment and Natural Resources Minister Vaughn Miller.

Speaking to our Joshua Williams on the sidelines of the South Central Link Up, Small,  the Deputy Director of Communications at the Public Hospitals Authority, said she brings years of experience and hopes to build on Miller’s legacy in the community.

The seat was left vacant after Miller’s untimely passing on September 28th. A by-election will determine who represents Golden Isles next.

A former leader of the Progressive Young Liberals and active member of the party’s Women’s Branch, the 36-year-old says this is her first time seeking a nomination.

“For me, the ability for Bahamians, and specifically those in Golden Isles, to feel seen and heard is key. When you knock on someone’s door, you don’t just listen, you act. My vision is to address concerns in housing, economic empowerment, health, and more.”

Small believes her training and passion have prepared her for the challenge, despite her age.

“As young as I am, as a woman and young entrepreneur, I’ve been consistent with the work. This opportunity speaks to where the party is, and where it’s headed.”

But she’s not the only one interested. PLP Men’s Branch Head Joe Johnson and Senator Darron Pickstock have also thrown their hats in the ring.

“We’re part of a great party, and I’m glad we all have an opportunity. My focus is on the voters who’ve disengaged from the process. This process matters, it’s how your voice is heard and your issues are brought to the forefront.”
