ABACO, BAHAMAS – Anchor of Bahamas Christian Network, Pastor Silbert Mills, is no stranger to tragedy on the island of Abaco. Around 8 a.m. Thursday morning, he received a call about a fatal traffic accident just east of the Treasure Cay Airport. Moments later, he was informed that a woman and a teenage boy had both died at the scene.

According to reports, another student who was traveling in the same vehicle was transported by ambulance to the Marsh Harbour Clinic. The female passenger of a second vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, was also taken to the clinic for medical attention.

Pastor Mills, who was among those alerted early on, says the crash deeply affected both students and educators, as the victims were reportedly connected to local school communities.

While residents have long been calling for improved road conditions, better signage, and adequate street lighting, Mills says those factors did not contribute to this particular tragedy. Instead, he is urging authorities to install clearer signage reminding visitors to “keep left” when driving on Bahamian roads, especially rental vehicles often driven by tourists unfamiliar with local traffic rules.

“This is what is needed,” Mills said. “We should be placing signs throughout the island, especially at rental agencies, so that visitors are constantly reminded to stay on the left side of the road.”

As the community mourns the loss of two lives, calls for stronger road safety measures continue to echo across Abaco.
