Baha Mar on Large Events Double Standard

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hotels have to apply to host large gatherings and don’t have a preferred position compared to non-hotel events, according to Baha Mar Senior Vice President Robert Sands, who was asked whether Bahamian promoters could host their events under Baha Mar’s license.

His comments raise questions over why the government allowed the Atlantis Resort to host a concert last month.

Sands on the defensive when asked by reporters whether a Bahamian promoter could apply to Baha Mar to host their mass event, under the hotel’s license. Sands says the hotel would still have to apply for permission, clarifying that groups staying in hotels are allowed to host their functions.

Some critics have suggested the government’s COVID rules are unfair because they appear to allow hotel properties more leeway in holding mass events, while Bahamian promoters are at the mercy of the Ministry of Health.

Prior to Valentine’s Day, A Dexta Daps concert was cancelled after the Ministry of Health refused to approve it for 2,000 guests.

Another reggae concert on the horizon plans to feature star performer Shenseea. However, Minister of Health and Wellness Dr. Michael Darville said his ministry is unaware of the event.

However, back in late December, the government appeared to use the hotel’s license as an excuse to allow Atlantis to go ahead with its Doja Cat concert, while Bahamian promoters were forced to cancel their New Year’s Eve events.

The most government would do about the Doja Cat concert, which was attended by thousands, was urge Bahamians not to attend it.

While he says he doesn’t wish to cause controversy, Sands says there’s a difference between an event for mostly vaccinated guests and one for outsiders.
