NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For 50 years, Base Road Bar has been a staple in the community and its owner, 72-year-old, George Robinson affectionately known as Sweetboy, is still carrying on the business his father started decades ago.

He says the first store was opened back in 1949.

“Then in 1968, we open up Base Road Restaurant and Bar,” he said.

“And then we started the liquor business in 1958. I moved to this location here in 1974, december 16,1974 we open Base Road Wholesale Bar, and here  we are today 50 years later, still in business going strong.”

As one of the oldest establishments in the area, it’s left it’s mark on the community.

Robinson says customers have taken on the role of family.

And while he has enjoyed success over the years, Robinson insists it hasn’t all been smooth sailing as he insists here are industry issues, a concern raised by other liquor retailers over the years.

“We think that it is so unfair that you are a supplier, a distributor, and a retailer. And I’m not speaking just for myself the young people in business, I’d like to see them do 50 years in business.”

But the businessman remains optimistic.

As the celebrations continue, Robinson says there are special things he has planned for his customers that have supported him throughout the year.

We here at Our News are wishing the Base Road Bar staff and owners a Happy 50th Anniversary!
