BIMINI, BAHAMAS – Strong reactions coming out of Bimini following news that Parliament has tabled a new boundaries report recommending the creation of two new constituencies, one of them a Bimini and Berry Islands seat.

Under the proposal, Bimini would be separated from West Grand Bahama, while the Berry Islands would no longer be attached to North Andros, making it the Bimini and the Berry Islands.

For many residents in Bimini, the move is being welcomed as a long overdue recognition for a growing island that has often felt overshadowed.

Vincent Ellis – Resident, Bimini

“ That’s the most amazing thing ever, ever happened. They’re so glad about that. They were tired, dragged behind.”

Biminites as they call themselves, believe a standalone constituency could bring sharper political focus, stronger advocacy in Parliament, and increased attention to Bimini’s expanding tourism economy.

Naria Rolle – Resident, Bimini

“ So sometimes we got caught up in the hustle and the bustle, and we always felt forgotten. So I’m so happy that we are finally remembered, you know what I mean?

Anita Harris-Bain – Resident, Bimini

“ Bimini being a part of West End, you know West End is bigger than Berry Island much, I mean more populated, you know, so I don’t think that the former or the MP, the standing MP can actually give as much attention as he ought to.”

However, who do they think would be the right man or woman to represent them?

Corwell Loren Bain – Resident, Bimini

“ Tasha Bullard-Hamilton.”

Anita Harris Bain – Resident, Bimini

“I’m not a feminist, and I don’t discriminate, you know? But I always believe that women, you know, women make things happen.”

Naria Rolle – Resident, Bimini

Randy Rolle,  Randy, he’s an island boy. The only thing we don’t do is walk around barefoot, no more. We just had to clean, every cleanup campaign he’s here. We had [a] children give away toys, he’s here. So he’s a part of the island.”
