NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A local bishop is joining alls for harsher penalties following a shocking case that has left a community reeling.

Just over a week ago, a man was sentenced to five years in prison for molesting his twin daughters.

A sentence that many say is too lenient given the gravity of the crime.

Highway Church of God General Superintendent Bishop Denzcil Rolle says to fathom that a father can be aroused or stimulated by his twin daughters speaks to a level of depravity beyond words.

“I believe when that kind of activity happens, and someone may say that i am being very extreme, i believe we are approaching the worst of the worst. Meaning that that is not a slap on the wrist kind of offense, because if you can do that to your daughter, what can you possibly do to my daughter,” Bishop Rolle said.

The man was sentenced after a judge rejected a lesser sentence proposed by the prosecution and defence.

His 16-year-old daughter tearfully recounted to the jury how she witnessed her naked father touching one of her siblings inappropriately.

The defendant had also admitted to assaulting his now four-year-old daughter.

Although he faced a maximum sentence of eight years, his early guilty plea and clean record led to a reduced sentence.

But Bishop Rolle is perplexed.

“To tell me that the law gives for eight years and because of a guilty plea it’s five years, I believe that we need to revisit the law and I think anyone that doesn’t see that, we may need to give you some counseling as well,” he said.

And the long-term effects are equally troubling for young men, according to First Assistant General Superintendent Bishop Karven Bain.
