NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As a teenager, my interest for journalism peaked. However, I was unsure which facet of the field I wanted to focus on; a challenge many budding journalists may also face.

The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) understands this difficult choice, and the fact that many Bahamians may lack awareness that they can focus on what is known as environmental journalism. With this in mind, they launched a series of workshops titled “Young Reporters for the Environment” a program that is recognized beyond our shores.

Their goal is to empower students ages 11 to 25 to take a stand on environmental issues they feel strongly about while giving them a platform to call attention to these issues through writing, photography, or video.

On Saturday, we met with the group at Deleporte Beach, who engaged in a series of educational exercises, including a scavenger hunt.

Ciera Stubbs – Student
“On the first time I did BREEF, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know much, I didn’t know much but being here on the first time it was amazing for me because I got to learn so much about climate change, overfishing, which are some things we should know, but I was able to learn more about that.”

Fifteen-year-old Davario Clarke, originally from Great Inagua, says the program provides a space for him to do what he loves.

“I wanted to learn more about the environment and how I can preserve it since I’m very passionate about the sea. So, when I came to Nassau for school, my mother did some research on it for me.”

The workshops not only serve as an open-air classroom, but it also sharpens their media skills, preparing them for local and international competitions.

Locally, winners will receive prizes including an underwater camera, gift certificates from Heatwave Bahamas, and more. From there, they move on to an international competition.

Ciera Stubbs – Student
“I shouldn’t be so happy about that award because I just want to make sure I was able to do my part. I was able to be in the competition. The award, it is amazing yes, but it still feels amazing to know that I was able to do that assignment.”
