DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – A bridge collapsed in the Dominican Republic, causing major disruptions to nearby communities and farming businesses over the weekend.

The incident occurred on September 25 when a cargo truck was crossing the bridge. The driver was killed during the incident.

An official told Reuters that a preliminary report showed a failure of the corbel when a heavy vehicle crossed the bridge.

The collapsed bridge has left many communities cut off, as it was critical infrastructure for one of the country’s primary cocoa‑growing areas.

Relatives of the driver, Pablo Guzman, held a funeral on Friday. The family believes the tragedy was caused by a lack of maintenance work.
