NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Trouble seems to be brewing at the Bahamas Telecommunications Company as the unions representing managers and line staff say members were unlawfully terminated. The unions are demanding they be reinstated or else. They’re also calling on the government to step in. Berthony McDermott has the details.

Unions representing BTC are up in arms amid allegations employees at the company were unlawfully terminated.

In a joint press conference with the linestaff and managerial unions at the telecommunications company, the unions accused BTC of terminating up to 11 employees within one week alone.

President of the Bahamas Communications and Public Officers Union, Sherry Benjamin says both unions are committed to doing everything within their power to ensure the terminated employees are reinstated.

Leaders of the Bahamas Communications and Public Officers Union and the Managers’ Union are claiming employees are being victimized and threatened if they do not do certain acts.

Union leaders say the company is deteriorating, adding that they don’t believe the company is living up to its contractual agreement with employees nor the service they provide to the public.

Meanwhile, Managerial Union President Kendrick Knowles doesn’t think so.

The unions also believe BTC is looking to get rid of trade unions by hiring contract workers and getting rid of permanent employees.

They’re calling on the government to step in.
