NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Drunk Monks claimed the annual Sean Neville Boxing Day 7s Championship presented by the Buccaneers Rugby Club.
The Monks finished the tournament undefeated, highlighted by a 28-26 win over first alert in the championship match yesterday at the winton rigby club.
In a back and forth contest, first alert scored the equalizing tie late in the second half, but the Monks’ Brian Baker blocked the conversion with time expired to seal the win for the Monks.
The Monks run in the tournament included a previous win over first alert 25-21 and a 37-31 win over all blacks.
First alert defeated All Blacks 26-19 and again 27-23.
The Buccaneers Rugby Club has traditionally hosted the event for over 50 years and it is now held in memory of Sean Neville, who was shot and killed in 2014.
A former division I soccer player, Neville also had a history of competing in the Boxing Day Sevens with the “Drunk Monks”.
Over the years the proceeds from the tournament have been donated to various charities, including children’s homes, and the education fund for neville’s daughter – Skylah.
NBA
Deandre Ayton’s third double double of the month, and 12th for the season helped his Portland Trailblazers complete a fourth quarter comeback.
Ayton finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots in the blazers’ 122-120 win over the Utah Jazz Thursday night at the Moda Center in Portland.
Anchored by Ayton, Portland outscored Utah 50-36 in the paint.
Trailing at the end of the third, they also outscored jazz 41-32 in the fourth quarter.
The Blazers improved to 10-20 on the season, 7-7 at home in the Moda Center.
In 21 games this season, Ayton is averaging 14.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 56 percent from the field.
Baseball
Following his first full season as a pro, Daunte Stuart is on the move in year two of independent baseball.
Stuart signed with the Lake Country Dockhounds of the American Association of Professional Baseball, an official MLB partner league.
Stuart spent his first year as a pro in the inauguaral season for the Oakland Ballers of the Pioneer League.
In 38 games, he hit .329 with seven home runs, with 22 rbi, scored 29 runs with eight stolen bases.
Prior to the pros, Stuart’s lone year with the Memphis Tigers earned him several accolades, including American Athletic Conference player of the week in mid April.
In 31 games he hit .350 with, four home runs, 29 rbi, and slugged .545.
Prior to Memphis he spent four years at Northwestern State.
