BOSTON, U.S.A – Buddy Hield may be primarily focused on a postseason run for his Philadelphia 76ers, but is still locked in with the progress of the senior men’s national team.
Hield took time out from 76ers shootaround this morning, to weigh in on the state of the national team program following the first window of FIBA Americup qualifiers.
Americup qualifiers resume in November, but the focus for the senior men’s national team will shift to the pre-Olympic qualifiers in July in Valencia, Spain.
NCAA Track and Field
Bahamians excelled at Indoor Conference Championship Meets across various levels of collegiate track and field.
Headlining the list of winners in NCAA di, Texas Tech Sprinter Terrence Jones won the Big12 200m title in 20.21 seconds.
His time set a new indoor national record and also tied the world leading time this season.
In the SEC, the Florida Gators’ Wanya McCoy took first place in the 200m in 20.49s and second place in the 60m in 6.63 secs.
In Conference-USA, Louisiana Tech’s Mateo Smith won the long jump with his mark of 7.38m.
In the Southern Conference, Samford’s Brenden Vanderpool took first in the pole vault at 5.20m and in the Summit Conference, South Dakota State’s Tristen Hanna won the triple jump at 14.93m.
In Division II Shyrone Kemp won a pair of NSIC Championships – the high jump at 2.10m and the triple jump at 15.81m.
On the track, Minnesota State Mankato’s Denisha Cartwright took first in the 60m, 60mh, and 200m.
Her 60mh time of 7.93s was a new pr and a division 2 record, her 60m time of 7.23s, was also a pr and division 2 season leading time, while her 200m time of 23.68s was a new conference record.
Baseball
Kristian Robinson is making the most of his opportunity with the Arizona Diamondbacks in spring training.
Robinson hit a 3-run hr in Arizona’s 9-8 loss to the Oakland a’s in Mesa, Arizona.
In 2023, the 23-year-old outfielder, he played his way back up from rookie league to the aa level where he helped Amarillo win the Texas League Championship.
The number 20 prospect in the d-backs pipeline hit .283 with 14 home-runs, 42 RBI and a .914 ops.
Equestrian
Equestrian Bahamas continues to make strides in the sport and competed for the first time at the Grand Caraibe Equestrian Competition tour.
Katerina Coello and Sienna Tinker were among 43 competitors in the espoir category in le le François, Martinique.
On day one, Tinker, riding, Valentino des Graves, finished 6th and Coello, riding, kenybest finished 11th
On day two, Coello and Kenybest made the jump-off and finished 13th. Tinker and Valentino had a strong round but finished with four faults, dropping them out of the ribbons.
100 athletes from 8 nations competed espoir, Elite and Grand Prix Divisions.
The Bahamas looks forward to competing in the fourth and final leg of the 2023-2024 Grand Caraibe Tour which will be held in Guadeloupe, May 8-12, 2024.
