NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The top senior men’s national teams in the region are in the capital right now for the 6th Caribbean Baseball Cup.
This The Bahamas, ranked no.47 by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, will host no.9 ranked and defending champions – Cuba, no. 12 ranked Dominican Republic, no.26 ranked and two-time champion Curacao, no.66 ranked U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Maarten.
The opening ceremony is tonight, and immediately following those festivities, Team Bahamas will hit the field to take on USVI in the nightcap.
Tournament play is a single round-robin.
After five games, the third and fourth-place finishers will play for bronze, and the first two teams will compete for the title on Monday, October 28.
On thursday the bahamas faces st. Maarten, followed by matchups against curacao on friday, cuba on saturday and the dominican republic on sunday.
Each game will be played at 7pm.
D’shawn Knowles returns for his second appearance in the Caribbean Cup.
Basketball
Kentwan Smith highlighted an active week for Bahamian basketball players throughout leagues in Europe.
In Cyprus’ Opap Basket League, Smith had 25 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, and a perfect day from the field to lead Anorthosis to a 94-74 win over Apoel (Apwell).
He shot 6-6 from the field, including 3-3 from beyond the arch and was 4-4 from the free throw line
The veteran forward spent last season in the Swedish Basketligan.
Over in Spain’s first league, Travis Munnings nearly had a perfect day for Fuenlabrada in their 94-74 win over Costello.
He finished with 12 points on perfect shooting from the field and added eight rebounds. His only miss on the day – 3-4 at the free throw line.
The six year pro spent the last two seasons in the French Pro B League.
On to a pair of first year players in Spain’s second league.
Garvin Clarke finished nine points and five assists for Godella in their 84-83 loss to Benicarlo.
Franco Miller Jr finished with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench for Palma in their 85-62 loss to Gran Canaria Two.
Soccer
Exuma school sports had a milestone moment when the island hosted its first ever primary school soccer tournament
George Town Primary School emerged as champions in the inaugural event at the L.N. Coakley High School grounds in moss town.
Head Coach Deven Johnson’s team defeated St. Andrew’s Primary 2-0 in the championship game.
Other participating teams included Moss Town Primary, and Exuma Christian Academy.
Bahamas Football association (BFA) executives said the tournament is a part of its ongoing efforts to grow the sport in the Family Islands.
Last month, BFA Technical Director Bruce Swan visited Exuma, where eight local coaches earned their D license certificates, marking a significant step forward in the island’s football development.
The BFA also looks to build on the success of this event and expanding further initiatives in other Family Islands.
