NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As athletes continue their qualification process for both disciplines of the upcoming CARIFTA championships, Bahamian officials on all fronts are monitoring the state of emergency declared in Trinidad and Tobago and any ramifications it may have on the events.

Both CARIFTA swimming and athletics championships are scheduled to be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago over the Easter weekend, but stakeholders across the region have speculated on the fate of the games after the country’s government declared a state of emergency.

Trinidad and Tobago recently extended that state of emergency on January 13 to counter the record number of homicides and the escalating trend of violence.

2024 was the deadliest year in Trinidad and Tobago’s history with a record 614 murders.
