DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO – The Centers for Disease Control is closely monitoring a mysterious disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has killed at least 60 people and sickened over 1,000, the World Health Organization reported Tuesday.

The illness progresses rapidly, with deaths occurring within a day of symptoms like fever, muscle pain, stiff neck, and bleeding from the nose. Adolescents and young men seem most affected.

Ebola and Marburg have been ruled out, but officials suspect bacterial Meningitis or chemical poisoning. The WHO says it is testing for causes, providing emergency supplies, and training health workers to track new cases.
