PARIS, FRANCE – The sprint hurdlers led the charge for Team Bahamas today as athletics continued at the Paris Olympics. Devynne Charlton and Charisma Taylor are through to the semifinals of the 100m hurdles, while Denisha Cartwright will have a second opportunity to qualify in the repechage round.

Charlton finished second in heat five in 12.71 seconds to earn automatic qualification. In the fastest heat of the preliminaries, Taylor finished fourth in 12.71 seconds to advance. Cartwright finished fourth in heat two in 12.89 seconds.

In a field that includes both the world record holder Tobi Amusan and Olympic record holder Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Charlton heads into the final with the ninth-fastest qualifying time while Taylor is 13th overall. Cartwright finished just outside the 18 semifinalists and at number 19, the NCAA DII champion heads into the repechage round with the fastest time. She will race in heat three tomorrow at 4:51 a.m.

Rhema Otabor had a top throw of 57.67m to finish 13th in Group A of the javelin. In her Olympic debut, the NCAA champion scratched on her first attempt and threw 54.76m on her second attempt.

Donald Thomas’ fifth Olympic bid concluded without a mark in the high jump. He entered the competition at 2.15m but failed on all three attempts.


Team Bahamas highlights from session two

The highlight of session two for Team Bahamas was Antoine Andrews in the 110m hurdles semifinals and Wanya McCoy in the 200m semifinals.

Andrews finished eighth in the first of three semifinals in 13.43 seconds, matching his exact time from the prelims. His time was 18th overall among the 24 semifinalists.

Running out of lane nine in the first semifinal of the 200m, McCoy finished fifth in his heat in a time of 20.61 seconds. He finished 18th overall in the event.


Daunte Stuart’s impact in pro baseball

Following a standout collegiate career, Daunte Stuart made the transition to pro baseball and is already having an immediate impact in the lineup. Stuart joined the Oakland Ballers, one of two new expansion franchises in the Pioneer League. The former Memphis Tiger hit his first home run as a pro in the Ballers’ 3-0 win over the NoCo Owlz.


Bahamas 1-1 at Billie Jean King Cup

After two days of competition, The Bahamas now has a 1-1 record at the Billie Jean King Cup. The team lost to Trinidad and Tobago yesterday 2-1 in group play of Americas Zone III.

Sydney Clarke got things started for Team Bahamas with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jordan Dookie. Trinidad and Tobago evened things up when Yolande Leacock defeated Simone Pratt 6-3, 6-2. They went on to win the tie when Dookie and Leacock defeated Clarke and Danielle Thompson in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6 in the tiebreak.

After a day off, The Bahamas returns to the court to face Barbados tomorrow and Jamaica on Friday.
