NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Three Chinese nationals are behind bars after being accused of forcing one of their compatriots into indentured servitude.

Prosecutors allege that 30-year-old Zhao Jinbo became a victim of human trafficking after he went to work at the Bird Cay Marina Corp in The Berry Islands.

Prosecutors say Xiang Gao, Li Qiang and Feng Gao conspired to engage in trafficking in persons between March 1, 2023 and July 19, 2023.

During this period, they allegedly withheld the complainant’s passport, suffocated him until he passed out and assaulted him.

Xiang Gao is charged alone with trafficking the alleged victim.

The accused, who work at Bird Cay Marina Corp, were not required to enter pleas to the charges when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Bail was denied and they return to court on October 5 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment papers.
