UNITED NATIONS – China is urging stronger unity among Haitian leaders and factions to help move the country out of crisis.

Speaking at the United Nations on Wednesday, China’s Deputy Envoy Geng Shuang said Haiti needs a long-term, Haitian-led political strategy, not one imposed from the outside.

He also called for strict enforcement of the U.N. arms embargo to stop weapons from fueling gang violence.

Geng said the root causes of Haiti’s instability, including poverty and lack of development, must be addressed. He added that foreign aid should be used to help Haiti build self-reliance, not dependency.

China says it remains committed to working with the global community to support peace and stability in Haiti.
