ENGLAND – Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has resigned after an investigation revealed he failed to report serial abuse by volunteer John Smyth when he first learned of it in 2013.

Smyth, who abused dozens of young men at christian camps in the UK and Africa was reportedly protected for decades by church leaders.

Pressure mounted on Welby after the report’s release Thursday, with victims calling for accountability and church leaders, including the Bishop of Newcastle, deeming his position “untenable”.

Welby acknowledged his responsibility and said his resignation serves the church’s best interests.
