Contract Signed for Exuma Intl. Airport Upgrade

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Exuma International Airport airside set to undergo major renovations to bring the facility up to international standards. A contract was signed Thursday morning at the Ministry of Works and Utilities to solidify the start of those renovations.

Works Minister Alfred Sears explains Exuma’s airport needs a range of aviation and infrastructure upgrades and faces challenges to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization safety and security standards.

In May 2021, the Minnis administration signed a $65 million contract and held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Exuma International Airport.

Fast forward to October of that year, and the then newly elected Davis administration said that project and others were put on hold.

As it relates to the newest work at the airport, Deputy Director General and Director of Aviation, Dr. Kenneth Romer says this upgrade is essential to the tourism product.

Paul Huckle, Commercial Manager for Bahamas Hot Mix, says they will utilize as much local labor as possible as well as inject into the local economy.

Principal of Integrated Building Services, Nick Dean, noting changes will reflect impacts of climate change such as rising sea levels.
