NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Police are sounding the alarm earlier this week on a troubling trend: the rise in suicides so far this year.

Mid-year stats for 2025 show suicides increasing from five to eight. All are male victims. Attempted suicides have also spiked by 39%, climbing from 23 cases in 2024 to 32 this year.

Crime consultant Dr. Carlos Reid, whose work focuses mainly on keeping young men out of trouble, says this could be the result of leaders dropping the ball at a critical time.

Carlos Reid – Crime consultant
“The highest percentage of it is males. We have to continue to send our message out about managing anger. I believe that we have not recovered from COVID-19. There are a lot of people that are being forced to adapt during that time, and I don’t believe that we have really gotten out of the trenches when it comes to that. But we gotta continue our efforts in how we bring trauma counseling to people and how we help people through these rough times.”

And while suicides are up, police say major crimes are down.
Commissioner Shanta Knowles reporting a 14% drop in overall crime, with 1,223 cases so far this year, compared to 1,420 during the same period last year.

Murders also fell by 26%, with 44 this year compared to 60 in 2024.

Carlos Reid – Crime consultant
“There’s a lot of work that’s been doing behind the scenes, like the public don’t see some of the interventions, some of the talks that we have, but we believe that we’re trending in the right direction.”

Knowles says 64% of criminal cases have been solved and that 84% of murder victims were between the ages of 18 and 45. Here’s what the crime consultant had to say to those statistics…

Carlos Reid – Crime consultant
“The Ministry of National Security always had a plan. We support the plan of this administration. And that plan, I believe that when it’s really turned up, we’re going to see further decline.”

Carlos Reid – Crime consultant
“I just want to encourage people, crime is not a police problem, it’s not a government problem, it’s all our problem. It’s all of us working together to have better communities so we can have a better nation.”
