CUBA – In Cuba, more than a million and a half students returned to classrooms this week, but schools are facing a serious teacher shortage.

Officials admit they’re short about 24,000 educators, with the biggest gaps in Havana and several other provinces.

The new school year is also marked by a lack of uniforms and textbooks, forcing some families to turn to the informal market.

Despite the challenges, Cuba’s education minister says classes will continue as planned, while the government again points to U.S. sanctions as part of the problem.
