HAVANA, CUBA – Hundreds of Cubans took to the streets of Havana over the weekend, rallying in support of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and denouncing United States policy toward his government.

Demonstrators waved Cuban and Venezuelan flags, held photos of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez and chanted that “Venezuela is hope,” not a threat. Venezuela’s ambassador in Havana thanked Cuba for its solidarity and accused the United States of undermining Venezuela’s sovereignty.

The rally coincided with a call from Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who urged supporters worldwide to march against Maduro. Protests were held in several other countries the same day.
