NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Accident and Emergency Block at the Princess Margaret Hospital is experiencing another setback.

Health Minister Dr. Michael Darville says the wing has still not opened due to reasons beyond their control.

Dr. Darville says while the building is pretty much complete, there’s still one thing that’s outstanding.

“There was a long lead item that had to be ordered,” the health minister said.

“These items are not on the shelves where you could just pick them has to be built in the project back by 4 to 6 weeks. I will report to the Bahamian  people on the update of the air condition system, which is presently being built abroad for shipment into The Bahamas.”

This update may come to the surprise of many.

The renovations were started under the Minnis administration in 2021.

Fast forwarding to December 2024, the Davis administration had a grand ribbon cutting ceremony for the new facility with hopes that the department would be fully completed by midyear.

According to the Nassau Guardian, the 200-bed hospital was initially expected to cost $290million, but is now expected to cost $267 following a technical review by Chinese engineers.

When asked if this new development will further change cost, Dr. Darville said “not significantly.”

“When you have a long lead item that you do not capture with “you have to sometimes go back and get an additional quote . I do not think it’s a substantial amount.”
