CHICAGO , UNITED STATES – Newly released Department of Justice files show former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, discussed strategies with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein – including plans aimed at undermining Pope Francis.

According to the documents, Bannon wrote in 2019 that he wanted to “Take down” the pontiff, whom he viewed as an obstacle to his nationalist, sovereigntist movement gaining traction in Europe at the time.

The files suggest that Epstein was assisting Bannon with broader political efforts after Bannon left the first Trump administration.

Messages also show Bannon referenced the book in the closet of the Vatican by french journalist Frédéric Martel and discussed the possibility of turning it into a film. At one point it floated the idea of Epstein serving as an executive producer.

The book examines allegations of secrecy and hypocrisy within the Vatican, including controversial claims about clergy and sexuality.
