NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A father is awaiting sentencing after he gave his 10-year-old son a painful lesson for failing a test.

The 41-year-old man pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of cruelty to children during his initial appearance before Magistrate Abigail Farrington.

The court heard that the boy was sent to school with bruises to his arm, legs and buttocks on October 7.

Officials at the private school the boy attends called the police after they noticed the child had difficulty standing and sitting.

He told them that his father had beaten with a thin metal rod because he had failed a test.

The father told the court that he was fed up because he had received repeated reports about his son slacking off in school.

The father has been released on his own recognizance and is due to return to court on December 10 for sentencing.

In the meantime, the magistrate has requested a social inquiry report.
