PERU – Eliza Denning made history at the 2025 Junior Pan American Games, closing out the sailing competition at San José Beach with a gold medal.
The 17-year-old dominated the ILCA6 class, posting a net point total of 11 and becoming the only competitor to secure two first-place finishes. Denning’s win marked Team Bahamas’ first gold of the Games and earned her an automatic spot at the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Earlier this summer, she also competed in the ILCA Youth Worlds in both the ILCA4 and ILCA6 divisions.
Olympic hopeful Joshua Higgins also represented the Bahamas in Paraguay, finishing 13th overall in the ILCA7 with a net point total of 40.
TEAM BAHAMAS VOLLEYBALL FALTERS IN OPENING MATCHES
Team Bahamas had a challenging start at the CAZOVA Senior Championships, falling short in both men’s and women’s pool play.
The men dropped a 3-2 decision to Jamaica, winning the first and fourth sets but losing the decisive fifth 15-11. The women also pushed their match to the limit against Guadeloupe, trading sets before ultimately losing 3-2, with the final set ending 15-11. The women’s team will return to the court tonight at 8 PM at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium to face Trinidad and Tobago.
TEAM BAHAMAS FINISHES FOURTH AT NACAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Team Bahamas concluded the NACAC Championships in Grand Bahama in fourth place overall, bringing home eight medals: two gold, two silver, and four bronze.
A standout performance came from Anthonique Strachan, whose 200m gold secured her an automatic qualifying spot for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
Veteran high jumper Donald Thomas took silver with a 2.21m clearance, while Wendell Miller earned bronze in the 400m (45.12 seconds). In relays, the mixed 4×400 team of Gregory Seymour, Katrina Seymour-Stamps, Andrew Styles, and Javonya Valcourt won silver (3:18.93), and the men’s 4×100 relay team of Adam Musgrove, Terrence Jones, Ian Kerr, and Wanya McCoy captured bronze (38.57 seconds).
BUDDY HIELD FOUNDATION HOSTS BACK-TO-SCHOOL GIVEAWAY
The Buddy Hield Foundation celebrated its 11th annual basketball camp and back-to-school giveaway at Pinedale Park, supporting over 650 children, the largest turnout yet.
Students received backpacks, shoes, school supplies, and more, while families enjoyed a community celebration.
Hield spent the day with fans and now shifts focus to a two-day clinic for coaches in Grand Bahama, followed by the 24 Elite Program in New Providence.
