Doctor Recalls Dorian Experience

ABACO, BAHAMAS – We continue with our series, “Where are they now?” as Abaco residents share stories of survival and progress over the past three years. Tonight, our Megan Shepherd sits down with a medical doctor who played a major role in saving lives while surviving his own life threatening ordeal.

Dr. George Charite says his life was spared twice during the passage of Hurricane Dorian and he credits it to what he calls the voice of God. You see, Dr. Charite had planned to stay at the Abaco Beach Resort, but, a quiet voice told him to head to his clinic instead. He would later learn that it was the best decision he could have made, as the resort sustained significant damage during the storm.  

While at his clinic, he says he ignored a voice telling him to go to his car, but on the third time, he listened. That’s when he says he got stuck in his vehicle as the rain battered down. He recalls the flood waters that caused his car to sway for about 30 minutes. 

Dr. Charite says it wasn’t until the roof of the building came off that he realized there were people inside, as it forced them to run out. He says they all weathered the brutal elements for two days on top of the Dove Plaza. Despite the ordeal, he is grateful for life. 

Some three years later, Dr. Charite admits that there is still much work to be done, but he is finding the bright side and applauding the work that has been done. 

Immediately after the hurricane, Dr. Charite actually operated his clinic out of a morgue. And now, he has been in his new location for the past eight months.  

He says he believes that people have been so busy simply trying to survive in the aftermath of Dorian and have been suppressing the trauma. 

Dr. Charite is inviting anyone that may be suffering from any sort of trauma or may need someone to talk to, to visit the Crisis Center at his facility.
