HAITI- Dozens of people have been killed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti after a powerful gang coalition reportedly turned on itself, triggering one of the deadliest internal clashes seen in months. Human rights groups warn the death toll is likely to rise.

At least 49 people have been killed in the Bel-Air area since Monday, including 10 children who had been recruited by gangs. Among the dead is a prominent gang figure known as Dède, who was reportedly beheaded. Another leader, Kempes Sanon, was seriously wounded and is believed to have been overthrown while receiving medical treatment.

The violence marks a rare breakdown within the Viv Ansanm gang alliance, a coalition that had previously agreed to halt internal fighting last year.

Reports indicate hundreds of civilians are trapped in their homes as gunfire continues, with food and supplies running dangerously low. The escalating crisis comes as Haiti prepares for a critical election year, adding new uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
