Edgecombe and Storr Named To Preseason Watch Lists

UNITED STATES – A pair of Bahamian national team standouts are listed among the top prospects on several preseason award lists.

VJ Edgecombe and AJ Storr were both named to player-of-the-year watch lists and are expected to be among the best at their positions this season. Edgecombe, an incoming freshman sensation, is one of three Baylor Bears named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Watch List, an award for the top player in college basketball.

He was also one of 20 players named to the Jerry West Award Watch List, honoring the nation’s top shooting guard. Edgecombe enters the 2024–25 season as a projected lottery pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Named the preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year, he heads to Waco after a celebrated prep career at Long Island Lutheran and international acclaim for his performance at the FIBA Olympic qualifiers last summer.

Storr was one of three Kansas Jayhawks named to the Naismith Trophy Player of the Year Watch List. Baylor and Kansas were the only schools with three players on the 50-person list. Storr, one of the top junior transfers in the country, was also named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Watch List. He transferred to Kansas from Wisconsin, where he was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team last season after averaging 16.8 points per game.

15U Team Prepares for Caribbean Baseball Cup

The senior men’s national team fell short at the Caribbean Baseball Cup, but expectations are high for the 15U team when they compete in December.

Following last week’s senior men’s event, The Bahamas will host top teams again for the U15 Caribbean Baseball Cup in December. The last time this team appeared in a tournament was the World Baseball Softball Confederation’s U15 Pan Am qualifiers last July in the Dominican Republic. Team Bahamas entered that tournament ranked No. 59 by the WBSC and finished with wins over 10th-ranked Panama and 31st-ranked Argentina.

The Bahamas finished fourth in Group A, just missing an opportunity to compete for the fifth and final spot in the U15 World Cup. Their performance improved the country’s WBSC ranking by 12 spots to No. 47.

National Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

The local sports community looks forward each year to the new class introduced to the National Sports Hall of Fame. The new class will be inducted at a ceremony on November 22 at the Baha Mar Resort.

This year’s inductees include Prime Minister Philip Davis, A.F. Adderley, Gary Bain, Oswald Brown, Nelson Chipman, Linda Ford, Sir Kendal Isaacs, Barbara Knowles, Randy Rolle, Rudolph Swaby, Stephen Hanna, Neko Grant, Doug Collins, Arthur Reggie Knowles, and Dawn Knowles. This year’s class will also feature its first team induction—the women’s national softball team that competed in the 1990 International Softball Federation’s Women’s World Championships.

Bahamian Players Shine in European Basketball

Bahamian basketball players recently had standout performances on their European teams.

Domnick Bridgewater is taking on a larger role for Chalons in the French Pro B League. He scored a season-high 16 points in 34 minutes off the bench in Chalons’ 84-78 win over a higher-ranked Pau Orthez. Bridgewater moved into the starting lineup for the next game against Hyères, finishing with 15 points and a season-high six assists in an 81-79 loss.

Rashad Davis also started for Caen, scoring 12 points in an 89-77 win over Nantes. Davis added six points off the bench in a 79-73 victory over Saint Chamond.

At number five, D’Shawn Knowles launched a home run over the right-field wall into Yellow Elder at the Caribbean Cup.

Coming in at number four, Buddy Buckets scored 19 points in the fourth quarter at home for a comeback win—“This Golden State thing is fun!”

At number three, history was made at Yankee Stadium as Jazz smashed a solo shot in Game 3, making him the first Bahamian to hit a home run in the World Series.

At number two, Kai Jones crossed over his defender, drove to the hoop, dunked on everyone, and drew the foul to complete the three-point play at the line.

And at number one, 15-year-old Kaizen Dorsett, the youngest player for Team Bahamas and at the Caribbean Baseball Cup, threw out a runner at second base—not once, but twice in the game—and led the tournament with four caught stealing.
