NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The family of the man who was beaten during an altercation on Saturday night is speaking out.

They spoke to our Delvardo Emmanuel today, saying they’re disgusted by the hurtful rumors and speculation circulating on social media.

He tells us more in this report.

The loved ones of 68-year-old Felix Morley is speaking out tonight, upset over what they describe as damaging speculation circulating on social media, following his death over the weekend.

Morley died Saturday night after police say officers from the Marine Support and Services branch witnessed a man beating the elderly man with a stick near Dunmore Lane.

Officers intervened and found the victim unresponsive, and Emergency Medical Services later confirmed there were no signs of life.

At the scene on Saturday night, Chief Superintendent Sheria King told reporters that police had a suspect in custody.

“ Since then, that male, the suspect. Was taken into custody and is assisting police in our investigation into this matter. At this present time, this matter is being classified as a death investigation until we do further investigation into this matter, a thorough investigation into this matter, and then we will properly classify this matter.”

That 39-year-old suspect is still in police custody and it’s unclear if he’ll be charged this week.

But today, relatives say they are troubled by online claims accusing Morley of being a petty thief and drug addict, arguing those labels are unfair and disrespectful.

Our News spoke with Morley’s cousin via Facebook. She says despite the 68-year-old having some challenges, he was a good person and insists the rumors online aren’t true.

She told us, “He was a great cousin when he had all his sense, but after he went on drugs a lot of things with him changed for the worse.”

She goes on to say, “What is said about him is very bad, all they had to say is he was from Inagua and he was the country’s latest murder victim case closed. They just run out. That is very bad. We the family, don’t like it at all.”

His cousin says Morley should be remembered for who he was, not rumors and accusations being shared online.

The death is still under investigation, with police still not confirming what led to the altercation.
