NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A father is facing up to five years for the death of his two-year-old son in 2023.

Demargio Thurston is behind bars awaiting sentencing after he was convicted of manslaughter by negligence in the death of Jeremiah Thurston by a vote of 8-1.

Justice Neil Brathwaite will begin the penalty phase of the trial on March 12.

Jeremiah died of asphyxia on August 12, 2023 after his neck was caught in the back window of the Suzzuki Swift his father was driving.

The jury by a majority found that Thurston was criminally negligent by failing to secure him in the back seat.

In his testimony, Thurston admitted that he didnt strap his son in with a seatbelt. He said his son was able to unlock the seat belt and operate the controls to the windows.

Thurston’s girlfriend, Sabrina Henry, testified that she was responsible for her son’s death because she wasnt supervising him while her husband drove.

Henry is serving a one-year sentence in the case after she took a plea deal on July 31.
