EXUMA, BAHAMAS – The world’s first mobile conch hatchery is in Exuma where it will start its live operating in the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park, a welcome step considering some studies have suggested The Bahamas could overfish conch to extinction within the next 10 years.

But what is a conch hatchery?

It’s essentially a controlled environment where they recreate ocean environments in indoor tubs to care for conch from its earliest stages until they’re ready to have a fighting chance to survive in the ocean.

Director of Science and Policy for The Bahamas National Trust, Falon Cartwright explains the next steps for the BNT will be to find community members to help operate the hatchery.

Cartwright tells Our News the success level of this hatchery may result in more throughout the country’s parks.
