NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The date has been set for the Free National Movement’s Convention.Party insiders tell us tensions ran high, during last night’s council meeting, as members went back and forth over a date.

Questions have also arisen over whether party leader Dr. Hubert Minnis will throw his hat back into the ring. Berthony McDermott reports.

Members of the Free National Movement will meet on November 27th to choose the party’s new leadership team, but it’s unclear if Dr. Hubert Minnis will run again for the leadership position.

When asked, Dr. Minnis told the Nassau Guardian “at the appropriate time y’gall will know what’s happening.”

Party Chairman Carl Culmer was also asked to address reports that Dr. Minnis may throw his hat in the ring.

It’s a different tone from the party’s chairman who last month said Dr. Minnis would stay on as party leader until the convention.

Now that the date has been set, he said officials will work out the details.

Party insiders revealed that discussions about the convention date got heated at times.

We understand another date was suggested outside the timeframe originally agreed on by the council.

Following the FNM’s crushing defeat at the polls on September 16th, the party chose to keep Dr. Hubert Minnis on as leader of the official opposition until a convention in November.

The party hasn’t held a convention since 2016 when then Deputy Leader Loretta Butler-Turner challenged Dr. Minnis for leadership.

While he won that race, Dr. Minnis was later removed as leader of the official opposition.
