ISRAEL – Peace talks between Israel and Hamas have resumed in the Red Sea city of Sharm el-Sheikh, exactly two years after Hamas’ deadly attack that ignited the war in Gaza.

The negotiations, led by Egypt and Qatar, are centered on a plan proposed last week by U.S. President Donald Trump. It calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops once Hamas disarms.

Trump says he believes there’s a “real chance” for lasting peace, while the U.N. Secretary-General is urging all parties to seize the opportunity.

Major questions remain, including who will govern Gaza and whether Hamas is willing to give up its weapons.

The war has left more than 67,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza health officials, with much of the territory in ruins.

U.S. envoys, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, are expected to join the talks later this week.
